This course aims to give students an overview of important elements of advanced English academic writing, with an emphasis on thesis writing. This course also seeks to help students develop as writers by raising awareness of, practicing, and reflecting on the conventions of written texts. In this course, we will talk about thesis/thesis proposal as an academic genre, and we will walk through the proposal and look at the key components, such as introduction, literature review, and methodology.
To be more specific, this course aims to:
1. Help students understand the thesis as a genre;
2. Enable students to develop an effective writing process appropriate for graduate work;
3. Improve students’ ability to read complex texts, especially to develop their ability to read demanding texts carefully and critically, and to analyze and synthesize the ideas and concepts in them;
4. Offer practical suggestions for completing this important culminating task more effectively;
5. Improve their research and library skills through individual research projects.

张文力，博士，毕业于美国俄亥俄州立大学外语、第二语言和多语言教育专业。现任中国科学院大学外语系讲师。张老师在中国和美国的K-12、大学、以及其他教育机构都有教学和工作经验。主要研究方向为双语与多语言教育、语言教师教育与发展、英语教学。多次参加国际学术会议并在国际学术期刊上发表研究成果，担任多个国际学术期刊和会议的审稿人。主要开设课程：学术写作（专业普及课）、学术英语读写以及高级写作（硕博公共必修课）。
