Cognitive linguistics is a growing interdisciplinary enterprise that seeks to ground theoretical models of linguistics with cognitive psychology. In order to teach students this relatively new approach to the study of language, we need to bear the following objectives in mind: (1) Students should know the basic concepts of cognitive linguistics. (2) They will be able to establish a relatively complete framework of cognitive linguistic study. (3) They will understand the research orientations in the field. And (4) they should be able to question certain ideas in some cognitive studies. The course will be conducted mainly through lectures combined with class discussions and students’ presentations. Two reading weeks will be given to students in the middle and at the end of the semester. Students are required to finish the reading assignment each time. There is no mid-term or terminal examination. Instead, a reading report of 2500 English words is required after the first reading week. And a paper in Chinese with more than 3000 characters should be handed in after the second reading week.
