This course will introduce students to the fundamental principles of good academic writing. Our teaching team will use a combination of classic instructive learning and innovative teaching methods, including flipped classroom, in-class group work and peer-reviewing to foster an active approach to learning. The aim of this course is to encourage students to read, write and think in English, with particular focus on problem-solution structures commonly found in the academic literature.
By the end of this course, all students will have a clearidea of the fundamental elements of academic writing, enabling students to continuously improve their analytical thinking skills beyond the timeframe of this course.
Working knowledge of oral and written English is assumed. Active participation throughout the course will be fostered through a participation-based scoring system. The anticipated minimum ratio of in-class hours to homework time will be approx. 1:2.

Torsten Juelich, 澳大利亚国立大学（Australian National University）医学科学（分子及细胞生物学）博士，免疫学研究博士后。2009-2012在澳大利亚国立大学生物化学和分子生物学院教授本科生《Gene Expression and Regulation》课程。
2012年来华后，Juelich 博士从事英文学术论文编辑工作至今。他与中国科学院生物物理所等多个实验室建立了稳定的合作关系，并协助京外多所大学、研究机构及医院成功发表学术成果。至今，他已完成共计30余个研究小组的300余篇科研论文的合作撰写与编辑，其中多篇已发表在Science, Nature和Cell等顶级期刊上。
2014年起，Juelich博士受聘于北京大学环境与工程学院，开设《Academic Writing in English》课程；2015年起同时在中科院大学生命科学学院开设英文科技写作硕士课程。2016年春季，他还应邀在中科院计算技术研究所讲授为期6周的英文论文写作培训。

范逸洲，北京大学教育学院博士研究生，主要研究方向为MOOC、教师培训和教学设计。参与设计、开发的《翻转课堂教学法》等MOOC课程，惠及全国近二十万人次的教师学员。近三年，参与教育部科技司、国家自然科学基金课题、IDRC课题等十余项，发表英文论文五篇。
