通过本课程的学习，希望学生能掌握发育生物学的主要特征，基本规律和发育的分子机理。
发育生物学是对于生物体生长和发育过程的研究，有胚胎学发展而来。发育生物学研究基因对细胞生长，分化和形态发生的调控，这些过程使生物体形成组织和器官。胚胎学有时被比较明确地规范到生物体单一细胞阶段，到独立个体之间的研究。直到20世纪，胚胎学是一个比较偏重述叙的科学。时至今日，胚胎学或发育生物学处理讨论一个生物体，如何形成个体正确及完整形态的各个步骤。进入21世纪70年代以后，发育生物学的研究主要着重于分子和细胞生物学水平上的胚胎学。
演化发育生物学的相关领域主要在1990年代形成，这是由分子发育生物学和演化生物学而来，研究不同物种间发育过程的差异性。经常被使用在发育生物学上的动物模式，有线虫（Caenorhabditis elegans）、黑腹果蝇（Drosophila melanogaster）、斑马鱼（Danio rerio）、小鼠（Mus musculus）和拟南芥（Arabidopsis thaliana，或称阿拉伯芥）。发育生物学的研究结果，可帮助了解染色体异常引起的发育不全，例如唐氏症。
